A criticism of compulsory education

For a long time, I have cosidered Milton Friedman to be one of the great education reformers of our time. Another great reformer is John Taylor Gatto. He taught in the public schools for 29 years. He was New York City Teacher of the year in 1989, 1990, and 1991, and New York State Teacher of the Year in 1991. At that point, he quit, saying that he was no longer willing to hurt children. I think what he meant was that he no longer wanted to be part of a system that hurt children, rather than helping them to develop a love for learning and realize their potential. He didn't stop there. He is now a well-known speaker and author, promoting true learning without compulsion (unschooling).
